U14s win first two matches

Under 14 Team Jets travelled away to play North Dorset Lightning and Plymouth Pilgrams in their first games of Division 2 Regional League.

In their first game against North Dorset Lightning, Jets came up against a very physical side. This resulted in a shaky start and Jets lead by one goal in the first quarter. The 2nd quarter began, and Jets kept a cool head and began to settle into the game. C and POM Chloe Lagadu set the pace of the match and helped bring Jets into the game with continuous pressure in the centre court. GA Maddie Reynolds worked tirelessly to bring the ball down the court, her drives and positioning in the shooting circle made it difficult for North Dorset defence to deny Jets the goals. Jets finished the 1st half of the game with a 23-11 lead.

Some changes were made at half-time to counteract the tall and physical team. Jets hit the ground running. GK Katie Henman continually hassled her player, keeping her away from the post and gaining some fantastic tips. GS Eva-Raine Clark held her space in the circle with North Dorset defence struggling to get around her, her consistent shots helped Jets to pull away and finish the 3rd quarter with a 35-17 lead. With a few more changes to the versatile squad, Jets took to the courts. GS Lottie was quick on her feet, gaining continuous rebounds and converting them to goals. Jets ended the game with a convincing 48-21 win.

The following day after a team debrief and a good analysis of the game, the team were feeling positive and determined. Plymouth Pilgrams started strongly taking an early lead. Jets bounced back and contested for every ball resulting in a 6-6 draw after the first quarter. Jets started the second quarter strongly, GD and co-captain Cerys O’Connell and WD Maddy Cameron worked effectively as a defensive unit in the centre, moving the ball down the court and delivering accurate and well-placed feeds into the attacking third. Maddy Cameron was superb on the transerve line, acting as a back-up option. Cerys gained countless interceptions and Jets finished the 2nd quarter with a strong 18-9 lead.

The 3rd quarter saw a fantastic performance from GK Helen Blackstone, her versatility in defence and countless tips ensured that Jets regained possession. WA Maddie Gott positioned herself tactically on the circle edge and consistently fed great balls into the shooters. GS Pia Gurner’s fantastic movement both in and out of the circle combined with her consistent shooting helped Jets pull away and finish the 3rd quarter with a staggering 41-12 lead. Pia’s dominance in the shooting circle earned her Player of the Match.

The final quarter began and despite being against a tall team, WA Taylor-Mai used her quick pace and good decision making to ensure the balls reached the shooting circle. Despite fatigue setting in, Jets continued to capitalise on missed opportunities and took a fantastic win with the final score 49-20.

U16s undone during first weekend of fixtures

U16 Team Jets suffered two defeats in their opening two matches in Regional Southwest Division 1.

In their first game against Exeter, Jets displayed excellent teamwork and defensive pressure to enter the second quarter only 2 goals down. After a nervous start, an experienced Exeter side continued to push their lead and despite many interceptions through court Jets found it hard to convert the numerous turn overs to goal. During the third quarter, Jets worked relentlessly to try and win back possession and managed to regain control of the ball to perform some fantastic pieces of play. Jets were able to force errors in the Exeter side and win back possession on plenty of occasions. Despite Jets’ determination and positivity they lost to Exeter 49-34.

Jets bounced back after their defeat and contested for every ball against a feisty West Exe side. The Jets were on target with their shooting and collaboratively fought against tall players to end half time 24-16 down. As fatigue began to settle in, Jets continued to play at a fast pace whilst West Exe pounced on the Jets unfortunate mistakes. Despite great effort from the Jets, West Exe emerged victorious, 49-23.
